Black Coffee Blues

My decision to go travelling wasn't taken lightly. I was grateful that I was in a job that allowed me to even consider taking such a financially demanding decision...

The job had started to consume me and my 40th birthday was hurtling through time and space like a dirty great meteorite. I took action. I made a decision. I decided to go travelling.

Like most things in my life so far. The travels could be invariably classed as 'almosts'. Almost made it to a decent level in MMA. Was almost a half decent footballer. Always made an indent, almost always made it to Base Camp of what ever I was pursuing, just never good enough, persistent enough, or driven enough to reach the summit. That analogy can also be used to explain my travel exploits. It was almost an epic journey, but just not quite epic enough...

However, the inspiration behind Thank The Universe did come during my travels. Whether or not it was directly influenced by my travels, I guess only the Universe really knows. But during a 3 day expedition to the Sahara Desert I was fortunate enough to have downloaded the Joe Rogan Podcast. His guest on this particular episode was Henry Rollins. I was never a fan of Rollins' music in all honesty, so I had never had an opinion of him one way or another.
The guy lit up my senses. His energy was infectious. He came across as a well read, fearless traveller, music lover and workaholic. His energy appealed to me.

By the time I eventually gave up the travelling ghost and returned back home after 5 months, I was researching Rollins and had bought one of his early paperback books, Black Coffee Blues. The book itself was a simple collection of Rollins' musings and observations, both based on fact and fantasy. It captured journal entries from his time touring with his band. It was or it even IS, something I believe I can emulate. However the book itself wasn't the greatest influence on me...
When the book arrived from Amazon (second hand of course!), a note was placed inside the back cover. The note was written personally for an intended person by their parents. The words were so beautifully structured, that the note made a real impact on me. And as such, inspired me to believe in myself and to create Thank The Universe... I hope that the contents of this site, can have a similar affect on you and to all that visit here...
